Be Bear Aware

Annual Bear Aware & Mother’s Day Event
Moms have FREE zoo entry on this day!
Date: Sunday, May 12th, 2024 (Mother’s Day)
Time: Activities from Noon-4pm (zoo open 9am-6pm)

Event partners: Members of the Anchorage Bear Committee including but not limited to, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Alaska Zoo, BLM Campbell Creek Science Center, Alaska Zoo, Eagle River Nature Center, Defenders of Wildlife, Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. We are partners committed to promoting bear safety and awareness to support co-existence in bear country. Let’s keep Alaska’s bears wild!

Join us on Facebook Live on Sunday May 12th to watch the black and brown bears of the Alaska Zoo test bear resistant containers. The black bears will be live at 1pm and the brown bears at 3pm. Crowds will gather to watch this testing in person at the zoo at the bear habitats. Will the containers survive the ultimate test? The bears will be the judge of that!

Join us 12-4pm for these activities:

  • Bear resistant container testing

    • Meet on the black bear bridge at 1pm, brown bear bridge at 3pm.

    • We will stream both of these sessions live on our Facebook page.

    • Thank you to ADFG and MOA Solid Waste Services for providing the bear resistance cans for testing.

  • Partner booths including a bear spray booth by BLM Campbell Creek Science Center.

  • Cotton candy for sale by zoo volunteers.

  • Kape Espresso Tayo Zoo Coffee Shop open for business across from the alpacas.

  • Zoo Gift Shop open for business.
