Spring is our most active time for summer seasonal hiring and most of these positions are in customer service. Full-time positions come open from time to time. JOB TITLE: Maintenance / Night Security
DEPARTMENT: Maintenance
REPORT TO: Project Manager / Facility Manager

The Alaska Zoo is looking for someone with some experience in one or all of the following - general labor, pressure washing, painting, janitorial, vehicle maintenance, and knowledge of hand and power tools. Must have a valid ADL. No DUI’s. Applications are available at The Alaska Zoo admissions office. YOU MUST FILL OUT AN APPLICATION. This is a full time year round position. Schedule is 3 days 8-5, 2 nights 10-6. The Alaska Zoo offers a competitive benefits package including: a matching 401k, 7 paid holidays, a generous paid time off accrual, and health insurance.

JOB STATEMENT/PURPOSE: Performs work necessary to provide a clean and secure environment for zoo animals and zoo visitors; to conduct needed maintenance of facilities, buildings, and equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Clean and perform necessary upkeep of public areas, restrooms, paths and buildings.
  • Participate in various maintenance and construction projects involving a variety of tools and materials.
  • Participate in construction and landscaping projects involving digging, hauling, and painting.
  • Conduct light repairs to machinery, pumps, filter systems, and other systems.
  • Perform snow removal.
  • Cleans and conducts repairs and improvements to animal exhibit/holding areas and public areas.
  • Actively contributes to positive guest experiences.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Advanced knowledge of maintenance and cleaning protocols.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of zoo policies, standards, operations, cleaning, and maintenance techniques.
  • Ability to precisely follow and enforce instructions and safety regulations.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and politely with visitor questions and misbehavior.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Arrive on time and demonstrate effective time management.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and co-workers.
  • Ability to work a highly flexible schedule – weekend, evening, holiday, and irregular hours may be required.
  • Other tasks as assigned based on needs of the business.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. repetitively.
  • Ability to regularly walk assigned area several times per day.
  • Strong sensory skills, such as good eyesight, good hearing, and dexterity.
  • Ability to safely handle and operate hand tools, power tools, and other equipment necessary to conduct assigned tasks.
  • Ability to work in Alaska weather extremes.
  • Job will generally be performed outside with moderate to extreme noises, pollens, dusts, and molds.

Seasonal Shuttle Driver Openings (2)

We have two openings for shuttle drivers to conduct our daily/hourly shuttle runs to and from the Alaska Zoo and downtown Anchorage. One opening is for a driver from May 13th through September 20th, 2017. The other opening is for a driver from June 1st through August 31st, 2017. Alaska Zoo shuttle drivers must be capable of safely driving a passenger bus to designated locations on a defined schedule while ensuring a very positive and welcoming customer experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Drive the Shuttle bus on set route and schedule
• Fuel vehicle and check fluids (oil & transmission)
• Clean shuttle inside and out
• Advise the maintenance department of any mechanical issues
• Maintain a record of the number of passengers picked up at each stop
• Interact with passengers in a positive, welcoming manner to promote the zoo

Successful candidates must have a valid Alaska State Drivers License, a cleandriving record and the ablity to meet federal and state driving standards. These positions also require an Alaska State medical card. The Alaska Zoo is a drug-free work environment.

Part-time Customer Service Positions: Coffee Shop

Two part-time positions open in our Coffee Shop, starting date will be in late-July

We are looking to fill two (2) part-time positions in our Alaska Zoo Coffee Shop located within zoo grounds. The successful applicants would start in late-July and be willing to stay through the winter season. The positions would be for barista work, filling coffee/espresso orders, preparing food, running the register/POS station, stocking/refilling supplies, cleaning the area and providing friendly customer service to our patrons. The zoo is a small work environment with a family feel, both among staff and patrons.

Successful candidates must have excellent cash handling and math skills, have the ability to be trained to use the register/POS station, be timely in reporting to work, be able to handle high volume rushes of customers in a friendly manner, be self-motivated and take initiative to keep busy cleaning, restocking, or completing projects during slower periods. Candidates must also be cheerful, attentive, and courteous to visitors and staff, both in person and on the phone. We ask that our customer service staff work well independently and as a team member with a willingness to help out other departments with projects if requested. Staff members must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and provide proof of or have the ability to get a current food service CHARR card within 30 days of hire for municipality compliance for food service. We expect a high level of attention to cleanliness, kitchen hygiene and adherence to all food safety protocols. Customer service experience is preferred.

The zoo is open 7 days a week. Shifts of normally 3-8 hours will be scheduled to cover open zoo hours which change with the seasons. Occasional later hours past zoo business hours might be required for rentals or public events. Starting pay for customer service part-time positions is $10 per hour.
