Thank you for your support and interest in the Alaska Zoo!  We operate through winter on low staffing levels, maintaining only permanent part-time or full-time positions. Spring is active for summer seasonal hiring.

Development Director (posted 3/28/14) - Open Until Filled

  • JOB STATEMENT/PURPOSE: The Development Director will help lead and direct the staff and board to raise funds for sponsoring zoo events and to establish a comprehensive fundraising plan for operating funds, with a goal of $1 million per year.
  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Work closely with the Executive Director and Board to develop long-term development, communications & marketing strategies and implement the long-term development plan.
    • Create and maintain the infrastructure of the Development Department
    • Oversee event planning and implementation
    • Develop key relationships with key donors, foundations and funding agencies
    • Oversee the grant writing process to include writing grants as need or assigning, and donor cultivation
    • Apply innovative techniques to continually increase funding for current and new programs
    • Provide Executive Director and Board with timely and frequent campaign reports and analyses
    • Develop and launch community campaign strategies
    • Create key messages that are appropriate for each project and stakeholder
    • Work closely with the Office Manager to manager donor database (We are also looking for a person for data entry for the Development Director and Office Manager)
    • Educate and train the Board, volunteers, staff and other key stakeholders on their role in development, communications and marketing
    • Keep informed on the current state of the Alaska Zoo and upcoming projects and events
    • Create and maintain budgets for each function/event that has a fundraising goal
    • Develop and implement strategy to build and increase the endowment fund for the Zoo
    • Interface with the Capital Campaign Director to communicate and coordinate interactions with zoo donors
  • JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
    • Bachelors Degree or equivalent
    • 5 years experience in development, marketing and/or communications
    • Experience in conceiving a comprehensive fundraising plan that includes membership and other annual giving, events, and endowments preferred
    • Demonstrated excellence in organizational, managerial, and communication skills
    • Not-for-profit experience preferred
    • Experience managing capital campaigns preferred
  • OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Follow safe and proper procedures in the course of daily work
    • Arrive on time and demonstrate effective time management
    • Other duties as assigned, including tasks which support the essential functions and may be changed or redesigned
    • Other tasks and duties based on the needs of the business
  • PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
    • While performing duties of this job, would occasionally be required to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop or kneel, talk and hear, and use fingers and hands to feel objects, tools or controls.
    • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
    • Ability to work in Alaska weather extremes.
    • Job will generally be performed in an office environment.

Admissions Seasonal Staff (posted 3/29/14) - Open Until Filled

We are looking for someone who enjoys a family environment, both with the zoo staff and zoo patrons, for immediate Part Time Seasonal staff position. This position's main duties will be selling tickets and passes, giving information, and selling concessions food in the Admissions cabin. The position will be primarily in Admissions, but will also cross-train in one or more of the other customer service areas (the Gift Shop and/or Coffee Shop) for coverage if needed. This person must be cheerful and attentive to customers, a stickler for cleanliness, must be able to work independently and productively, and work well as a team. Excellent cash handling and math skills are a must. This position requires the ability to handle high volume rushes as well as keeping busy cleaning, restocking, or completing projects during slower periods. Requires some lifting of up to roughly 50 lbs. Must provide proof of, or get, a current food service CHARR card within 30 days of hire for municipality compliance. Customer service experience preferred. The zoo is open 7 days a week. Shifts of normally 3-8 hours will be scheduled to cover the hours of 9:30am-5:30pm in March and April, 8:30am-6:30pm daily in May and September, and June through August 8:30am-9:30pm. Occasional later coverage hours might be required for rental events or zoo events. The customer service seasonal positions normally end in September.

The position will be primarily in the Coffee Shop, but will also cross-train in one or more of the other customer service areas (the Gift Shop and/or Admissions) for coverage if needed. This person must be cheerful and attentive to customers, self-motivated, thorough, a stickler for cleanliness, be able to work independently and productively, and have good cash handling/math skills. This position requires the ability to handle high volume rushes as well as keeping busy during slow times by cleaning, restocking, or working on other department projects. Requires occasional lifting of up to roughly 50 lbs. Prior customer service, barista, or food service experience preferred. Must provide proof of, or get, a current food service CHARR card within 30 days of hire for municipality compliance. The zoo is open 7 days a week. Shifts of normally 3-8 hours will be scheduled to cover the hours of 10:00am-6:00pm in March and April, 9:00am-6:00pm daily in May and September, and June through August 9:00am-9:00pm. Occasional later coverage hours might be required for rental events or zoo events. The customer service seasonal positions normally end in September.

Facilities and Maintenance (posted 4/03/14) - Open Until Filled

The Alaska Zoo is looking for applicants with experience in one or all of the following- vehicle maintenance, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, general labor, painting and janitorial.  knowledge of hand and power tools a must.  Applicants must be able to lift 50lbs repetitively.  Applicants must have a valid ADL.  A CDL license is a plus.  No DUI's.  Applications are available at the Alaska Zoo admissions office as well as below.  YOU MUST FILL OUT AN APPLICATION, NO EMAILS.  The Alaska Zoo offers a competitive benefits package including: a matching 401k, 7 paid holidays, a generous paid time off accrual, and health insurance.
